(THR) Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham's reunion crime flick Wrath of Man is headed to China. The MGM-produced movie will open in the world's largest theatrical market on May 10, three days after its North American opening.
Wrath of Man is a remake of the 2004 French film Cash Truck by Nicolas Boukhrief. The film follows Statham's H, a "mysterious and wild-eyed new cash truck security guard" who just so happens to have professional-level cash-defending skills when an attempted robbery transpires. Filled with vengeance, H also is on the hunt for the people behind his son's murder.
It's been a decade and a half since the duo worked together, but Wrath of Man is Ritchie's fourth directorial collaboration with Jason Statham, following Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Snatch (2000), and Revolver (2005).
Statham haș a strong following in China thanks to the Fast & Furious franchise, which is one of Hollywood's most popular tentpole series in the country. His 2018 U.S.-China co-production The Meg, about a giant prehistoric shark, also proved a surprise summer blockbuster in the country, earning $153 million there.
May is shaping up to be a relatively busy period for Hollywood releases in China, after the seemingly endless fallow period of the pandemic. The final Lord of the Rings film, The Return of the King, is rereleasing on May 14, followed by Fast & Furious 9 on May 21. F&F9 is opening in China a full five weeks earlier than North America, where it doesn't unfurl until June 25.
