Actor Huang Zhizhong moves to directing with TV series

(China Daily) In an acting career spanning over 20 years, Huang Zhizhong has starred in a number of roles, ranging from the upright official Hai Rui in the Ming Dynasty in 1566, to Communist Party military leader Zhu De in The Founding of an Army.

But the ambitious actor is now shifting gears. And his directorial debut, Detective Ke Chen, recently made its debut on Beijing Satellite TV and the streaming site iQiyi.

Set in 1920s Tianjin, the 44-episode period drama centers on a detective working at the city's police station who unravel a series of mysterious cases.

In the series, Huang stars as detective Ke and actress Li Qian plays Ke's romantic interest.

Meanwhile, the veteran-studded cast also includes actor Wu Gang, known for China's all-time highest-grossing film Wolf Warrior 2, and Taiwan actor Chin Shih-chie, a best supporting actor winner at Beijing International Film Festival for the martial arts film The Master in 2016.

Separately, at a recent promotional event in Beijing, Huang said that most of the scenes for the series were shot over eight months at a film and TV drama filming base near the West Taihu Lake in Changzhou, in Jiangsu province.

And he said that the crew used an area covering 10,000 square meters to build streets and houses featuring the architectures of Tianjin in late 1920s.
