(THR) Netflix is set to stream 70-part Chinese drama series The Rise of Phoenixes starting Sept. 14 in over a dozen languages.
The costume drama about princes and warriors, set in ancient China, is also now seeing Netflix serve as co-producer with China’s Croton Media.
The series is loosely based on Huang Quan, a novel by Tianxia Guiyuan. It debuted in China on Hunan TV and Taiwan on iQiyi on Aug. 14, with Netflix rolling it out in the rest of the world. It is starting with the first 15 episodes and will then launch new episodes every Friday.
The show stars Chinese film and television leading man Chen Kun in his first television role in a decade, along with The Flowers of War actress Ni Ni, who makes her television debut in the series in a cross-dressing role. Wong Kar-Wai’s longtime collaborator William Chang was the series’ artistic director and costume designer.

Netflix has signed deals for more than 200 hours of Chinese television series since 2016 for streaming outside of China.
