He was admitted into National Taiwan University Hospital in March for treatment after gallstones were found in his body, but later suffered from chronic pulmonary disease (a lung disease that makes breathing difficult) and was transferred to the intensive care unit.
His condition then worsened when he was diagnosed with septicaemia (a bloodstream infection that is often referred to as blood poisoning), and eventually succumbed to his illnesses.
After he passed on, his good friend, Taiwanese host Chang Hsiao Yen, shared a black photo on Facebook with the Chinese word “pain”.
The Golden Horse Best Actor retired from showbiz in 1989, and is known for his gangster roles in Taiwanese crime movies, before making a switch to comedic roles.
He won the Golden Horse award for his role in 1982 movie Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing?, in which he played an old soldier whose adoptive daughter becomes a singer.
After leaving showbiz, he was actively involved in charity work, and was an advocate for anti-smoking campaigns. Despite suffering from lung disease, he continued to do community work, and gained respect for his dedication to help those in need.
During an interview two years ago, the veteran actor shared that he had already prepared his will, and will live the remainder of his life with a positive mindset. He added that he was not afraid of death, and will treat each day as if it was his last.
