| On January 27, 2018, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands attended opening events of Leeuwarden-Friesland European Capital of Culture 2018 (LF2018). Leeuwarden, in partnership with Friesland, is the European Capital of Culture 2018. Valletta in Malta, and Leeuwarden-Friesland in the Netherlands, have been named as Capital of Culture for this year. Malta and Leeuwarden have strong agricultural ties.
