Lefkada (Greece): Dinner on the Jetty at Dimitris Taverna in Geni

We were supposed to stay in a small country house/villa in Geni but the tour operator we booked the holiday came back informing us that the location is fully booked and that we didn’t make it to the cut. We were very disappointed because we were really looking forward. We knew this place was special. Luckily, the other accommodation, which was a hotel along the marina was also nice.

Geni is a peninsula not too far away from busy and touristy Nydri. You can get here with the car or boat. The nice thing about this place is the location and down the small harbour of the village you can find a number of tavernas on the water. Many have built extended jetties where you can tie a small boat and even dine as well.

It is very romantic and beautiful. Just how you would picture a Greek island summer holiday to be like. Because we really like this place we came to Geni 3x! The first time was have our lunch at Elena’s Taverna. The second time was dinner at Dimitris, hence this blog entry. And the third one was our last evening’s dinner at Seaside Restaurant, voted as the number one restaurant in Lefkada on Tripadvisor.

What we love about Dimitris is that the jetty are really out there on the water, on Vliho Bay. You have a great view of the Geni basin all the way to Nydri. You have also a good view of the other restaurants and the hilly peninsula. It is breathtaking.

Strangely, many diners that evening were dining at the other restaurants. I had the feeling that the others were marketed very well as I saw a few business cards of these establishments at tour operators. When we had lunch at Elena many came in groups with tour guides.

Nevertheless, we chose Dimitris for its location. They could make the tables nice through by placing plants or flowers and perhaps candles. You can really feel that it’s a mom and pop taverna. The father and children helping the guests while mom cooks. That’s the feeling we had.

We didn’t really had a proper huge starter. We ordered an aubergine salad (called Melitzanosalata) to go with the bread. This was nice, and as we slowly ate the bread with the salad as topping we take in the lovely view around us. It was a nice feeling to be dining on top of the water!

Then our main courses arrived, which by the way took ages. If there is one thing this taverna needs to drastically change it is the speed of the service. Service and friendliness of Dimitris and his family were absolutely wonderful, but the speed is an issue. I wish they could have some light music playing in the background as well.

Dutch mother was not very hungry so she settled for a big salad. The Dutchman had some grilled chicken with vegies and fries while I went for seafood again. A delicious plate of grilled prawns. Ah, this was juicy and delicious!

For our coffee, which the three of us had 3 different types. The Dutchman with his cappuccino, moi with my espresso and the Dutchman mother with a normal Nescafe instant coffee. We paired this with some baklava from the house. Of course very sweet but I only tasted a bit which was already enough for me.

We loved to bits our dinner here and I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Lekfada. Do take note that there is another Dimitris up in the mountains. So if you go here, always say Dimitris in Geni, the taverna on the water.

TIP: This taverna has its fresh fish in an underwater cage so you can pick your choice. If you do not have a car, scooter or boat, you can take the taxis in Nydri. I think prices go between 5-10 euros one-way. You can bargain of course if you want a retour service.

The Dutch mother is taking in the special location of this restaurant.

This is dining on the jetty here at Dimitris Taverna and forgive my very bare face, I just had a long restful afternoon at the beach. I mean do you wear makeup and all that grab when beaching?

Aubergine salad (Melitzanosalata) as toppings for our bread.

At the other end of the jetty was this couple having a romantic and private dinner. Beautiful.

Our main courses arrived. It took a while but I cannot complain of its quality and taste. Very nice.

Tuna salad for the Dutch mother.

Dutchman had a grilled chicken (breast I think).

And moi had some scrumptious grilled prawns, and well this view as well on Vliho Bay. I really enjoyed our dinner here very much.

Then some sweet baklava to go with our 3 sets of coffee. Cappuccino for the Dutchman, espresso for moi and normal coffee for the Dutch mother.

The underwater fish cage in the middle of the restaurant and these are live caught fish, so everything you eat here is fresh.
