Directed by Feng Xiaogang, a highly successful commercial filmmaker in China, and starring Huang Xuan, Yang Caiyu and Xu Fan, the New Zealand- and China-set romance revolves around a Chinese man who returns to New Zealand following the death of his wife and begins to discover that she harbored a number of secrets.
"Only Cloud Knows" was released by China Lion Film Distribution in Mandarin and English with English and Chinese subtitles in selected theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Vancouver, Toronto and a few other major cities across the United States and Canada.
"We are very excited to release this Feng Xiaogang's masterpiece in North America and the United Kingdom," said Wu Jiang, a marketing manager with China Lion Film Distribution.
"We haven't seen a great romance film in the Chinese-language film market in North America for years. 'Only Cloud Knows' tells a love story between a Chinese couple who were living abroad, we hope that our audience can find their emotions related to this film," Wu told Xinhua.
China Lion Film Distribution was founded in 2010 in partnership with Huayi Brothers Media Corp. and Bona Film Group, the two major entertainment conglomerates in China. It has celebrated over nine years of releasing Chinese-language films, with more than 15 new titles each calendar year at theaters throughout Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Some film critics categorized "Only Cloud Knows" as "a kind of perfect holiday movie for those inclined towards light-hearted romance." As Richard Gray, an editor with The Reel Bits, said, "Coming with an added bit of emotional weight thanks to the real people who inspired this, shown in photographs over the closing credits, this is romance that consciously makes a grab for the tissue box."
The film has received a number of positive reviews from critics in North America. Scott Marks, with San Diego Reader, wrote, "There isn't an emotional experience with which to warm your heart this holiday season than comes close to this."
