Canto-pop singer Gillian Chung and Taiwanese doctor hold wedding celebration in Los Angeles

(SCMP) Canto-pop star Gillian Chung and her fiancé Michael Lai had their wedding celebration in Los Angeles, in the United States, last Friday.

The Hong Kong-born singer and actress Chung, 37 – who with her bridesmaid Charlene Choi form the popular singing duo, Twins – wore an elegant Jenny Packham ivory flock tulle Adorn wedding dress, with ruffled sleeves and a deep-V chiffon collar, at the celebration held at the city’s historic 1923 Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

She and Lai, a Taiwanese doctor, had announced their engagement only in February, when Chung posted a photograph on Instagram of her engagement ring on her hand.

The night before the wedding celebration the couple’s families attended a banquet dinner at a Chinese restaurant across the street from the luxury hotel – known for its stunning architecture and elegant interior featuring frescoes and murals, carved marble fountains and columns, crystal chandeliers, and embroidered tapestries.

Lai, who was previously married to former air hostess Ivy Chao, practises medical cosmetology – the study and application of beauty treatments, such as cosmetic surgery, hair and skin care and botox injections.

He first attracted the public attention’s because of his uncanny resemblance to American-Taiwanese actor Sunny Wang.

The British designer Packham is much in demand among celebrities.

Korean actress Min Hyo-rin, who married K-pop star Taeyang, of Big Bang fame, wore the same dress as Chung after her wedding reception, following the couple’s marriage in February.

The Duchess of Cambridge – better known as the former Kate Middleton – also wore the designer’s red dress with a lace collar when she posed for photographers with her husband, Prince William, alongside their third child, Prince Louis, after the baby’s birth in London in April.

In a touching yet amusing moment during the wedding celebration, Chung – rather than tossing the bouquet over her shoulder in the traditional way – sprinted towards her dumbstruck, long-time “bestie” Choi and shoved the flowers in her hands.

Choi – better known in Hong Kong as Ah Sa – and Chung made their debut as Twins in 2001. They recently performed a concert during their world tour in Los Angeles.

In a teary post after the wedding celebration, Choi recounted her 18 years of sisterhood with her “wife”, and wrote: “Although you are not Mrs Choi but Mrs Lai now, you will forever be my ‘little Gill’.”

Chung’s other two bridesmaids – fellow Hong Kong Canto-pop stars Yumiko Cheng and Joey Yung – who nearly could not make it to the wedding because visa problems – also posted their congratulations on social media after the celebration.
