Jolin Tsai banned from performing ‘Play’ at Shanghai concert

(Toggle) Jolin Tsai’s hit song ‘Play’ has been deemed to have ‘vulgar content’ after a recent inspection by the Shanghai Culture and Television Film and Television Administration Bureau. The bureau released official documents yesterday, claiming that the lyrics were coarse, and did not approve her performing the song in her upcoming concert in Shanghai next month.

This news left many fans angry as ‘Play’ was intended to be the opening song for the concert. This was also one of the Taiwanese singer’s popular songs and the sudden cancellation left many fans protesting that this was an “old song” and there were “other songs with worse lyrics” that have been performed.

Her manager Wang Yu Liang was unclear on the situation and revealed yesterday that Jolin had previously performed this song on her tours in other cities. Furthermore, the album received approval in China itself where physical copies were even being sold.

The album, Play, has won nine Golden Melody awards and the music video title track, ‘Play’ was the most-viewed Chinese music video of 2014 on YouTube. The album also won Jolin an MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Taiwanese Act and an Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Asian Artist.
