It is rare that two Chinese blockbusters unite and work together during ongoing promotion whereby the main cast of one film sang a theme song for the other.
Chinese comedian and director Da Peng and his fictional Sewing Machine band from his new musical film "City of Rock" just released a theme song on Tuesday for the upcoming rival fantasy blockbuster "Wu Kong," a film adaptation of an internet novel "Wu Kong's Biography."
Such a union of two domestic films has never happened before in China's film industry, which also reflects the need for Chinese films to stage a united strike back on Hollywood blockbusters which have dominated the Chinese market for most of this year. The collaboration has wowed Chinese fans.
Da Peng's directorial debut "Jian Bing Man" grossed 1.16 billion yuan in China. His second directorial work "City of Rock," will be an original comedy about a young rock 'n' roll lover's passion for music as he strives to fulfill his musical dream. "City of Rock" is set to hit Chinese screens on Sept. 30.
"Wu Kong" is a film adaptation of "Wu Kong's Biography" written by Zeng Yu, under the pseudonym Jin Hezai, which is actually an alternative and post-modern narrative of the stories of the rebellion of freedom-seeking monkey demon Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from the ancient Chinese fantasy classic "Journey to the West."
The book became an instant hit and cultural phenomenon, selling 2 million copies since 2000. It is directed by Derek Kwok, who co-directed Stephen Chow's top grossing "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" in 2013, and starring Shawn Yue and Eddie Peng. The film is going to be released on July 13.
Jin Hezai and Zhao Yingjun co-wrote the theme song for Da Peng's band to perform. The golden line "I want the sky not to cover my eyes, I want the earth not to bury my heart" from Jin's book was adapted into the lyrics.
