“I’m praising myself to no end today - so this is the last compliment I’ll be paying myself!” Yoga Lin chuckled. It’s a Saturday afternoon and the Taiwanese singer is back in Singapore after three years - while he was away, he completed his military service and registered his marriage with his girlfriend of two years, Kiki Ting.
The change in Yoga was evident: he has become more self-assured, more outgoing and carefree since his last visit, engaging in good-natured bantering with the media after a louhei session at Crystal Jade Prestige.
He popped by our little red dot as the opening act of the Huayi 2017 festival, selling out all tickets to the Esplanade concert in the blink of an eye. “I felt that the concert was a huge success although I only performed for about 90 minutes, but I do feel that it could have been even better if I sang for the full three hours that I usually utilise at my concerts,” the 29-year-old mused.
Towards the end of the concert, Yoga declared to the audience that his wife was in attendance as well.
When everyone started to look around for Kiki, he then quipped, “You don’t have to look so hard for her since she’s so easy to spot. You should be able to spot her with one look because she’s so adorable!”
His unabashed display of affection was an indicator of how open he is with his marriage and relationship with his wife. When asked about his state of mind prior to taking the stage with his other half in the audience, he pondered for a moment before responding, “I’m actually less nervous with her around. The night before my shows, I tend to think about this and that, but with her around, she reassures me and tells me not to overthink things, and so I’m much more relaxed.”
Given that both husband and wife are in Singapore this time around, we asked him if this would count as a honeymoon for the both of them. “No way - we’d be too pitiful if I had to work while on honeymoon!” he laughed.
“We haven’t really made plans for a honeymoon yet because it will have to depend on my work schedule; we also have yet to make concrete plans for a wedding ceremony, but I hope that we’ll be able to have one this year.” He is also considering putting the Northern Lights on his honeymoon itinerary, explaining that he once saw them while on a plane back from Canada and would love to share the experience with Kiki.
With the pair being lawfully wedded, we also questioned if baby-making plans are in progress. “Not for now, but I’ve already started thinking of names for them,” Yoga quipped. After asking for suggestions from the media present, he jokingly narrowed his choices down to Lin Shi (with the English name Snack Lin) and Lin Qian (with the English name Cash Lin), chuckling that it will all depend on his future baby’s gender.
The newly-married musician previously revealed that he has been furiously writing songs recently, and we wondered out loud if he found his inspiration from his blissful wedded life. “I hope the single male singers out there won’t misunderstand this - it’s not that being married has given me a burst of ideas, songwriting is really about hard work!” Yoga chuckled.
He continued, “I was writing the lyrics for ‘Ju Ren De Jian Bang’ for a car brand and I really couldn’t think of anything that wouldn’t sound overly like an ad. I was about to call the company to tell them that I wouldn’t be able to do it when I happened to see the signed album that Mayday gave me - on it, they wrote, ‘Listening to Yoga Lin’s songs while driving’ and the lyrics and melody flowed from there.”
Yoga Lin’s albums, Sell Like Hot Cakes and Sometimes The Great Yoga Sometimes Speaking in Tongues - Yoga Selects Live CD are now available in major music stores.
