Mumbai – 12th Oct, 2016:
For this Pune-based artiste Deepa Vedpathak, there’s an inherent meditative quality in the art work! Mumbai can get a glimpse of her exhibits in the series ‘Colour Concert 2. A prequel to the show was hosted in 2009 which had floored all the art lovers. Deepa’s love for music and bright colours is evident in her works. There is a very significant influence of music in all aspects of her work. Deepa’s works visualize the moment when music gets played and transports a human mind away from the bindings of day to day life. The subjects, the moods, the compositions, the colour schemes and the brush strokes – all together evoke a subconscious image of a concert being performed by men and women in love looking to alleviate the pains of the material world. Hence the show is titled “Colour Concert 2”. It’s a series of 25 Paintings which vary from 3ft and 4ft tall. The show is scheduled to be held from 10th Oct to 16th Oct 2016 at Jehangir Art Gallery, Kalaghoda.
In accordance with the title of the show, there are multiple musical instruments in the works, including sitar, guitar, drums, tabla, mridangam, violin to the latest fad of headphones. Most of the characters in the works have with their eyes-closed, is an effort to portray their high degree of involvement. The paintings are equally vibrant with the use of what the artiste calls happy colours — bright shades of a rainbow palette comprising yellow, orange, red, blue, green. “Music is such an inspiration. Many of my family members have been into it and whenever, I’ve been to mehfils and concerts, it was a pleasure to observe people immersing themselves into the ambience. With the use of the colours, I wanted the works to ensure a sense of happiness to a viewer although I didn’t want to be indulgent,” says Deepa Vedpathak who’s been painting since 18 years. Deepa is inspired by works of notable artists Ram Kumar, Gaitonde, Adimoolan and M. F. Hussain.
Not only music, also subtle vignettes of culture find its way into the paintings, such as temple priests, a rural woman with her eyes set on a bird, a modern-day music lover with her headphones plugged in, a couple of works on how music binds a couple too. At Colour Concert 2, every painting has its own story to tell like a painting titled, ‘Immersed I & II’, which depict celebration of freedom which shows a girl playing guitar and headphones on her ears, making people wonder how she is so happy and so much immersed in music that she even care about others. Likewise another art work called ‘Celebration’ has a girl dancing and enjoying the beats played by the boy on drums, depicting that their innocent love. ‘Mehfil’ is a painting which shows the fusion of music and bright colours which depicts happiness. ‘Harmony’, ‘Drummer’, ‘Sakhi’, ‘Myself’, ‘Endless Love’ are more such beautiful works depicting love and its celebration through colours making it look like a colour concert. As the notes of music gets played they subtly beckon a sensitive listener to enter a trance where music reigns and excels in creating a moment of complete oneness with the ‘absolute’ and a state of eternal bliss is achieved.
“The world is nothing but a canvas of imagination”, says Deepa whose paintings are not just a piece of art works but they depict a story of her imagination. She also believes music heals all your pain and makes you flow with its melodious sound. About her technique, she explains, “When the colours take shape on canvas, it does not have any limit and I too struggle with the colours and do not limit them in any specific shape. It makes my work effective and I think weight and balance should come together in the paintings. And that makes my paintings an art work which depicts its own emotions. They are all figurative so it’s not difficult to understand and any other person can relate to it. I always wish to make people happy through my paintings”.
The works mostly reinstate bonding between people with music in the air, everything and everyone seems to be caught in the moment of complete harmony. Responding to the magic of the moment, created by music the couples in the works enter a deep trance and a pleasant spell. The stances, gestures and attitudes of the protagonists are like a natural instinct/response to an enchanting musical rendition.
